J-Rap CD Review: DyyPRIDE 「Ride so dyyp」

"If KILLahBEEN wouldn't have dropped his Album "公開", SD JUNKSTA's "OVERDOSE NIPPON" would've been my favorite Album of the year."
That's what i said last year when SD JUNKSTA were dropping their new CD. Well. At that time i didn't have my hand's on DyyPRIDE's Album "Ride so dyyp." So i want to clarify this: I totally love SD JUNKSTA's most recent release "OVERDOSE NIPPON" and i'll definitely Review that CD here, as well. But to me, "OVERDOSE NIPPON" pales in direct comparison to the most recent release of SIMI LAB's own, DyyPRIDE "Ride so dyyp." Why? I'll tell you.

Artist DyyPRIDE
Album Name Ride so dyyp
Release date 2013/03/08
Label SUMMIT
Features OMSB, TAKUMA THE GREAT, USOWA, JUMA, DJ ZAI, MARIA
Tracks 14
Total Runtime ~43 Minutes

Tracklist

1. INTRO (SKIT)
-.
Runtime 01:07

2. PAIN
The MV to this track was uploaded to youtube about 1 month before the album was released.
The MV itself is... something special i'd say. It's pretty low cut, no overhyped stuff or needless effects or anything, it's pretty basic. Especilly cool is the parts where DyyPRIDE is in some kind of a dark room with the light bulb floating around. It just looks bad-ass.
The Track itself is very good. The beat may take some time to get used to (since it sounds like it's not the best quality, but i think that was their intention) but the most emphasis is, of course, on the lyrics.
A very good first track that immediately sets you in the mood for the rest of the album: Gangsta rap incoming!

3. 死闘
(Romaji: Shitou)
(Translation: Struggle to death)
Oh - my. This Track right here. You remember KILLahBEEN's Track "囚 [Undah Parole’s Demo]" where he was literally rapping for almost 30 minutes? The Beat to that Track was simple. Just drums, no bullspit. This track however takes it one step further: You get NO drums, you only get DyyPRIDE's "dyyp" voice and the beat consists of just bass and 1 or 2 instruments.
And a freaking awesome catchy chorus to sing along to.
PROPS! This is why i love Rap music, because of tracks like this.

4. Lost
Or tracks like these. I'm not even lying: I have listened to a fair amount of Rap tracks so far, but this Beat. THIS BEAT! Listen to it:
I don't think that i have ever heard a beat that is more bad-ass, crisp, flawless and down right beasty as this one. And i'm not the only one. i sent this beat to a couple of guys and they were all blown away by the sound of that Beat.
I rest my case. This is one of my favorite Tracks of all time.
Whoever made that beat: You are a genius.
And DyyPRIDE: You are a beast on a rampage on this Track. Epic shit.
I do have one complaint though: The Song is way to short. For the next album: Take the beat again and make a 30 minute track.

5. 極東のと或る監獄にて (SKIT)
-.
Runtime 4:46

6. feat. OMSB: 煌めいた監獄
(Romaji: Kirame ita kangoku)
(Translation: Glitter board prison)
OMSB is responsible for the Beat here and he also drops a couple of lines.
I think he was also made the Beat for "Pain." It wouldn't surprise me, because both beats sound pretty much alike, which isn't a bad thing, because i think that's just OMSB's style and i like it.
DyyPRIDE is on his game in terms of the flow and so is OMSB. Even though OMSB's part is rather short.

7. Made in 信念
(Romaji: Made in shinnen)
(Translation: Made in belief (faith))
Another beefy beat. I'm not sure if it quite fits with the theme of this track, where DyyPRIDE lists his belief's in the chorus, but nevertheless, the track as a whole works. Just like in "Lost", this monstrous beat underlines how much of a bad-ass DyyPRIDE is.

8. feat. TAKUMA THE GREAT & USOWA: Visual trick
Well. There has to be something for everyone, apparently.
I don't have a problem with the artists on this Track, it's mostly the Beat i have a slight disagreement with. I'm not a fan of that "futuristic" kind of Beats and  that's what you get here. It's a bit too mainstream for me. I prefer tracks like "死闘" where the beat is still dope but it's pretty simple and it's up to the artists and his skills on the mic to make the track memorable.
But the good things are: 1) They didn't use autotune (if they would, i wouldn't see them as "gangstas" anymore)
and 2) All artists do a great job at the mic.

9. My machine
Damn it. Why isn't this song on YouTube?
Anyways this track is basically like "死闘." Never change a winning concept, eh?
You get a relaxing tune with some piano sounds, drums and claps, a GREAAAAAAT catchy chorus and DyyPRIDE gearing down a bit and just flows slower and crisper. Great track to chill to. I love it.
Or as DyyPRIDE says in this track "Smoke cheeba cheeba."
If you listen to this track once and the chorus doesn't get stuck in your head, then there is probably something wrong.

10. Ride so dyyp

Now we definitely follow the "never change a winning concept" rule.
Another simple beat, DyyPRIDE showing of his skills in the verses and another catchy chorus.
Just listen to it and you'll know what i'm talking about.

11. feat. JUMA: Route 246
You probably end up throwing some furniture my way for mentioning him, but it's worth it.
Ex SIMI LAB member "QN." When he dropped his last Album under the SIMI LAB logo, there was a track on that Album called "Cheez doggs." And who was featured on that track? Exactly. JUMA.
Who is featured in this track? Exactly. JUMA.
What do these tracks have in common? Exactly. I don't like them.
Why? Exactly. Probably because of JUMA.
Let me clarify that: Of course i don't have anything against JUMA personally, because i don't know him. I just don't like his style. Tracks with him are probably meant to come off a "smooth" but to me they come off as "soft" and i'm not into that.
On this album i'd rather listen to "Ride so dyyp", "死闘" and "My machine" if i wanna listen to something "smooth."
So this track is not my cup of tea, but fans of JUMA are gonna enjoy this, i'm sure about that.

12. feat. DJ ZAI: Minority blues
Listening to this Beat, i may be wrong about OMSB making the Beat for "Pain" the Beat for "Pain" could've also been done by DJ ZAI. Because in terms of the style they sound alike.
But the Beat and the scratching in the chorus are very well done. A good, laid back track where DyyPRIDE gets to display his crispness again.

Rating  3/5

13: We can't move back
The emphasis for this track is mostly on the lyrics. This is what makes this Track stand out. But aside from that. The track as a whole is pretty weak compared to the other tracks. No memorable chorus and a Beat that is just "there." It feels like DyyPRIDE is somewhat disjointed from the Beat.
Listen to the other tracks and you'll probably hear it too. Something's off.
Runtime 02:48
Rating  2/5

14. feat. MARIA: All your mind
MARIA! The only female member in SIMI LAB. And a damn good one.
Chorus? Sung by MARIA. Def and catchy. Beat? Epic and catchy. The verses? DyyPRIDE is spot on.
This is one of those kind of tracks you can't get outta your head after you hear it once.

Artwork   4/5
The artwork for "Ride so dyyp" is rather unique. I'm gonna make a comparison:
Both of these Albums are downright underground gangsta rap albums. It doesn't get more OG than KILLahBEEN and DyyPRIDE. But if you just look at the covers. You clearly see that KILLahBEEN's Album is exactly what it looks like: Bad-ass underground Rap. But if you compare it to DyyPRIDE's. DyyPRIDE's Album doesn't really look like a underground Rap album, does it?
And it's totally different from other SIMI LAB's releases such as OMSB's "Mr. All Bad Jordan" or the usual SIMI LAB Collabo albums. Then again, every SIMI LAB member has kinda it's own artwork style. Especially DJ ZAI's artworks are always... out of the regular i'd say.
Nevertheless, the Album cover is pretty good. Not as good as KILLahBEEN's but close.

Flow   4/5
A HIIIGH improvement over DyyPRIDE's first album "In the dyyp shadow." While "In the dyyp shadow" was a really good first release, it wasn't as good as you might hve expected. Yes, DyyPRIDE has a wider variety of styles and he is more unique at flowing than QN, but in his first release he probably hasn't really found his style yet. In this one it sounds like he found his style. While i still think he was a bit off in "We can't move back" he is on his game for the other 13 Tracks on this.
His "dyyp" voice really fits those simple, bass heavy beats.
And let's not forget that one of his strenghts are definitely the lyrics. Even if you don't understand japanese (yes, i am also still highly limited) you can understand the "dyypness" and intensity in tracks like "煌めいた監獄" and "Made in 信念." Just look at the translations for those tracks.

Beats  5/5
One word: "Lost." "Lost" has such an epic, beefy, beast-mode sound that it blows you outta your seat. There is only one proper way to listen to this: With the volume turned all the way up. And it's still too quite than.
But you get quite a variety.
You have a "new age" kinda beat in,"Route 246" some experimental and somwhat "crazy" beats in "Pain", "Minority blues" and "煌めいた監獄"
As well as those intense, simple beats in "死闘", "My machine" and "Ride so dyyp."
Beat-wise this Album is truely OG.

Choruses  5/5
Sung choruses. I meantioned it in the Review to 神's first Album "ザ パンチ" i love when someone, wether the Artist of the Album or a feature guest, sings in the chorus, because they get really catchy then. And while i wouldn't say that DyyPRIDE's strength is to make memorable choruses, he really surprised me with this one, because you get quite a bit.

Features ☆ 4/5
The only feature guest on this Album who isn't a SIMI LAB member is TAKUMA THE GREAT. Aside from him, all other feature guests are members from SIMI LAB, wether they made the beat or appear as MC's. And i already mentioned it during the Review to KILLahBEEN's Album: I like that DyyPRIDE is mostly going solo on most tracks. Too many feature guests are not my cup of tea, because i bought the album because i wanna listen to DyyPRIDE. Sure, it's cool to listen to some other SIMI LAB members, but i still bought it because of DyyPRIDE.
So yeah, i like that DyyPRIDE is mostly going solo on this one.

Overall Rating  5/5
I'm gonna quote "Far East Vibes" here:
I first found out about DyyPRIDE back in February, and I’ve been checking for him ever since. Ride So Dyyp is the 10th track off his new album of the same name released March 8th, and it’s straight Hip Hop- you can’t get more OG in this modern age than this. Really digging his vibes, and I desperately wish I understood Japanese. Anyway, check out the MV below and lemme know what you think!
(Full article here: http://fareastvibes.com/?p=18952)

I underline this. Apparently the blogger wrote this before DyyPRIDE dropped his album, because he just linked you to the MV for "Ride so dyyp."
Well as a whole this Album is pure, crisp underground Rap. I think i already said enough, i just wanna say it once more:
If KILLahBEEN wouldn't have dropped the best album in the history, "公開" in 2013, then "Ride so dyyp" would've definitely been my favorite release of the year. Many memorable tracks, a tremendously HIGH replayabilty, dope Beats, great mic skills. This get's my seal of approval. If you are a fan of straight Rap, then grab this one. As "Far east vibes" said: You can't get more OG in this modern age than this. Period.
Oh one more thing: If DyyPRIDE, BLAHRMY and KILLahBEEN would team up in the future to work on an album together. I think the world would collapse. The 4 best MC's on the planet on one Album together? Holy spit.
